Any of them can replace a $12,900 average venue for a few hundred dollars, and the restaurant or hall option often folds in the tables, chairs, and staff you would otherwise rent. Why the venue is the first place to save
The average U.S. venue runs about $12,900 (The Knot, 2026), and venue plus food together are roughly half of any wedding budget. That makes the venue the biggest single saving available to you. Five venues that replace a $13,000 room
- A restaurant's private room. Food, space, tables, and staff come in one line item, which quietly removes a pile of rental costs. This alone can save $3,000 or more versus a standalone venue.
- A park, hall, or backyard. Trade a $13,000 venue for a permit and some rentals. Real savings here run $5,000 or more.
- A community or church hall. Often a flat, low rental fee, frequently with tables and chairs included.
- A family backyard. No venue fee at all; budget instead for a tent, rentals, and restrooms if the guest count is large.
- A public park or beach. A permit plus your own simple setup. Verify local rules on gatherings, alcohol, and amplified music for your specific spot.
The date matters as much as the place
The same venue costs different amounts on different days. The Knot's 2025 data shows the cheapest months are January, November, and December, and the cheapest days are Thursday, Wednesday, and Sunday, with a Thursday averaging about 6% less than a Saturday. Off-peak venue and vendor rates commonly run 10 to 25% lower. Booking a park or hall on an off-peak Friday or Sunday stacks two discounts at once.
Watch the hidden venue costs
A cheap venue is only cheap if it does not force expensive add-ons. Before you book, check what is included: do you have to rent tables, chairs, and linens separately (renting linens and glassware rather than buying saves $150 to $400); is there a kitchen or a required caterer; are there restrictions that force pricier vendors. A restaurant or hall that includes furniture and staff often beats a cheaper-looking raw space once the rentals are added up.
